It can also be referred to as Asperger’s (primarily differentiated from Autism by the person’s language skills), Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Classical Autism, High Functioning Autism, Kanner Autism, Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD).
These different terms are used by different groups of people, depending upon the agenda of their diagnosis, the toolkits used to for the diagnosis, as well as the primary characteristics of the person undergoing the diagnosis. In the UK, ASD is the most commonly used term, particularly by medical professionals. Here at the Autism Information and Advice service, we prefer to use the term ASC, as this is becoming more commonly used by the ASC community, as the language has more positive connotations. The important thing to note is that the variety of names used to describe ASC and the traits they refer to reflect the wide array of ways ASC is experienced.
As ASC is a condition that affects how a person perceives the world around them, many aspects of everyday life can therefore be much more challenging for a person with ASC. Activities that neurotypical (the word used to describe people who do not have ASC) individuals often take for granted, can in fact be overwhelming for a person with ASC. For example, shopping at the supermarket, going to the cinema, attending a job interview, or going on a night out. All these activities include navigating a series of unpredictable situations, interacting and communicating with lots of different people, and coping with a variety of competing sensory experiences. When we consider this, it is easy to understand why people living with ASC often describe the social world as overwhelming and significantly anxiety inducing.
A person living with ASC may therefore find the following challenging:
- Interacting and communicating with others – especially strangers
- Understanding sarcasm, metaphors or abstract ideas
- Integrating competing sensory experiences – including touch, noise, smell and light and colours
- Processing and understanding what is happening around them
- Coping with a change of routine or an unexpected situation
- Understanding and responding to the emotions of others
Because of the unique way a person with ASC’s mind works, they may also exhibit the following characteristics, which other people may find difficult to understand:
- An unusually strong interest in a specific topic or subject
- Repetitive actions or behaviours
- Non-typical emotional responses or expressions
- Under or over reaction to specific sensory stimuli or an extreme dislike of something
- Restrictive eating habits
- A need for strict routine or the development of habitual behaviour
It is therefore easy to see why a person with ASC may feel ‘different’ to others and why they may find the social world and building relationships with non-ASC individuals frustrating.
The many challenges that a person with ASC may face and the common traits of ASC are often broken down into three specific categories:
- An impairment of social understanding and relationships
- An impairment of communication and interaction
- An impairment of imaginative thought and inflexibility in thoughts and behaviours
However, it is important to recognise that all people with ASC experience their ASC differently. When thinking about ASC, it is helpful to remember,
“If you’ve met one individual with autism, you’ve met one individual with autism”
(famously said by Dr Stephen Shore – an Autism advocate and on the Autism Spectrum).
Everyone’s ASC is therefore different – this is why it is called a spectrum condition.
It is not currently understood what causes ASC and lots of research is being conducted to better understand how and why ASC develops. One thing that we know for definite about ASC is that it is not caused by a person’s upbringing, how they were parented or their social circumstances and is not any fault of their own that they have ASC. There is no ‘cure’ for ASC (and many would argue, no need for one). Instead, people with ASC develop coping strategies to better manage the social world around them. For example, common coping strategies include:
- Developing a weekly routine – for example, Monday night is food shopping night, Tuesday night is visiting family night, and so on
- Creating visual supports – such as making lists or schedules or drawing out a map of a place they are due to visit
- Using directional statements or plans – like saying ‘first I will do X, then I will do Y’
- Carrying sensory support equipment – such as glasses with tinted lenses or ear defenders
- Role-playing or practising for new experiences – such as preparing for a job interview with a friend
- Balancing the stresses of everyday activities with the enjoyment of a specific interests – so devoting their evening to reading about their interest of choice
- Taking regular breaks
- Being open about their needs and requesting support
Finally, it is important to note that how ASC presents in men and women is different and that historically, research claimed that only men could be Autistic. This has since been proven false. However, as a result of this, not only has the general understanding of ASC developed with a male-centred bias, but it also means that many girls and women have been missed as requiring a diagnosis. Current research is now being conducted to correct this bias and to better understand how girls and women experience ASC.
